In a major relief to farmers across India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the 20th instalment of the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana on 2nd August 2025, transferring over ₹20,500 crore directly into the bank accounts of nearly 9.7 crore farmers. This move is part of the government’s continued efforts to support small and marginal farmers with assured income and financial stability.

What Is PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana?

Launched in December 2018, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) is a Central Sector Scheme where eligible farmer families receive ₹6,000 per year, distributed in three equal instalments of ₹2,000 every four months. The amount is directly credited into the farmers’ bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

Since its inception, the scheme has become one of the largest income support programs in the world, having disbursed more than ₹3.69 lakh crore to farmers in 19 instalments before this.

20th Instalment Released by PM Modi

On August 2, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Varanasi, disbursed the 20th PM-Kisan instalment, benefitting farmers across the country. The funds were released in a public event, where the PM also launched several development projects worth ₹2,200 crore in Uttar Pradesh.

With this instalment, ₹20,500 crore was transferred to 9.7 crore eligible beneficiaries under the PM-Kisan scheme.

Eligibility Criteria for PM-Kisan

Not all farmers are eligible under this scheme. Here are the key criteria:

  • The farmer must be an Indian citizen.
  • Must own cultivable agricultural land in their name.
  • Must have completed e-KYC.
  • Aadhaar number must be linked to the bank account and PM-Kisan portal.
  • Government employees, income tax payers, and institutional landholders are not eligible.

How to Check PM-Kisan 20th Instalment Status

To check whether the ₹2,000 has been credited to your account:

  1. Visit the official website: pmkisan.gov.in
  2. Click on “Beneficiary Status” under the Farmer Corner.
  3. Enter your Aadhaar number, PM-Kisan Registration ID, or Mobile Number.
  4. Click on “Get Data” to view your instalment status.

Farmers will also receive SMS alerts on their registered mobile numbers once the money is credited.

Mandatory e-KYC: Do It Now If Pending

To continue receiving future instalments, e-KYC is mandatory. There are three ways to complete it:

  • Online OTP-based e-KYC via the PM-Kisan portal.
  • Biometric authentication at nearby Common Service Centres (CSC).
  • Face-authentication via the PM-Kisan mobile app.

If e-KYC is not completed, future payments will be withheld. So, farmers are strongly advised to check and complete it at the earliest.

Economic Impact of PM-Kisan

This scheme has played a crucial role in:

  • Providing financial cushion to farmers during crises like drought, floods, or pandemics.
  • Improving agricultural productivity by enabling timely purchase of seeds, fertilizers, and equipment.
  • Reducing dependence on informal money lenders.

With more than ₹3.6 lakh crore disbursed since 2019, PM-Kisan is seen as a lifeline for India’s rural economy.

Common Reasons for Payment Failure

If you haven’t received your ₹2,000 yet, check the following:

  • Incorrect Aadhaar details or mismatch with bank account.

  • Inactive bank account or issues with DBT mapping.
  • Wrong land records or ownership details.

You can correct these details online or by visiting your local agriculture office or CSC.
