How Bharat NCAP Works

 


1. Eligibility

  • Only new passenger vehicles (M1 category) sold in India are tested.
  • Cars must have at least 6 airbags, seat belt reminders, ESC (electronic stability control), 3-point seat belts, etc., to qualify for 5-star ratings.


2. Crash Tests Conducted

Test Type

Description

Frontal Offset Crash Test

At 64 km/h, 40% of the front crashes into a deformable barrier—simulates head-on collision.

Side Impact Crash Test

A trolley hits the side of the car at 50 km/h—simulates being hit at intersections.

Pole Side Impact Test (optional)

Car is propelled sideways into a pole at 29 km/h—tests side head protection (mainly for 


3. Scoring System

➤ Adult Occupant Protection (AOP)

  • Max score: 32 points
  • Based on injury to head, chest, thighs, knees, legs (driver & passenger).
  • Includes seatbelt reminders, airbags, structural integrity, etc.

 Child Occupant Protection (COP)

  • Max score: 49 points
  • Includes use of child seats, ISOFIX mounts, airbag disabling features, restraint labels, etc.
